You and Your Money
"IT’S FALL CHECKUP TIME"
By William P. Seranko, FIC - Supervisor, District # 1
Anti-Money Laundering Compliance Officer

September, 2011

IT’S FALL! Depending on where you live, you may feel a chill in the air. Maybe even the leaves are starting to change colors. Possibly you may already have experienced the first frost of the year. Perhaps, as recommended by many local Fire Departments, you may already have changed the batteries in your Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms and Detectors. You caulked around windows and doors to stop any cold air drafts coming in. If you have a lawn or garden, maybe you are taking steps to get them ready for winter. The list of "Gotta Dos" could go on and on. You are feeling good because you think that you are getting all of the chores done early. You are feeling safer and better prepared for what soon will be here.

STOP --- THINK AGAIN --- A "FALL CHECKUP" now will lead to answers and other equally important things. Do a "FALL CHECKUP" on YOUR FINANCIAL SECURITY for you and your Family! When was the last time that you checked and reviewed your Life Insurance protection? Do you have enough Life Insurance Coverage to protect those in your care? Life is uncertain. None of us know when or how something may happen to us. Will those depending on us be able to carry on if we are no longer around to provide for them?

Putting off purchasing Life Insurance until later when you think you could be in a better position financially to buy it may work against you. Anyone can suddenly develop an illness that can make a person uninsurable from that point on. What would those "Depending on You" do if this situation developed in your life? Would you or your spouse be able to carry on without the financial support that you were contributing to the household? Would someone have to try to find a job to replace the loss of your income? How would your home mortgage payments be covered or would it be necessary to conduct a DISTRESS SALE of YOUR HOME? Would your children’s education be jeopardized because tuition payments could not be met? The questions could go on and on. Acquiring enough Life Insurance NOW can meet future misfortunes that may occur.

Now the question is, HOW MUCH Life Insurance is enough? The amount can change from time to time as an individual’s own situation changes. Examples of variables include when you get married, when children are born, when you get a bigger house, etc. Just like the "Fall Seasonal Gotta Dos", the list could go on and on. The review should consist of determining the dollar amount of Whole Life Insurance, Term Life Insurance or Group Life Insurance that you have on yourself, your spouse and your children. Then ask yourself the question, will this amount be enough to cover the debts if something happens to you or your spouse? A PRCUA agent can assist you in conducting a "No Obligation Needs Analysis", which will determine the actual amount of Life Insurance that is recommended for you and your family.

Should "children" have Life Insurance? Actually there are several reasons why children should have Life Insurance. Having Life Insurance makes them eligible to participate in the PRCUA Dance and Language Schools and the PRCUA Scholarship and Mortgage Loan Programs. As they grow to adulthood having Life Insurance at a lower premium from childhood prepares them.

If your son or daughter contracts a catastrophic childhood illness, which would be unfortunate, it would make them ineligible to obtain Life Insurance from that point on. It would be comforting to know that you provided Life Insurance for them when they were healthy and therefore "Medically Qualified" for the Coverage. Statistically, according to the "American Childhood Cancer Organization website, each year in the United States, there are approximately 12,400 children between the ages of birth and 19 years of age who are diagnosed with cancer. About one in 300 boys and one in 333 girls will develop cancer before their 20th birthday. In 1998, about 2500 died of cancer, thus making cancer the most common cause of death by disease for children and adolescents in America." A PRCUA agent can help you in determining the Type and Face Value of Life Insurance that will best fit your situation. Call Today!!

Part of this "Fall Checkup" should include reviewing Primary and Contingent Beneficiaries. The PRCUA agent will assist in this area of the "No Obligation Needs Analysis".
